Dans ce livre qui rend hommage à Bachalou Nondichao, célèbre traditionniste béninois, l’auteur retrace l’histoire du Danhomè (Dahomey) sous le règne de Kpengla. Né vers 1735, le prince Yansunu accède au trône le 17 mai 1774. Roi sous le nom fort de Kpengla, il y reste jusqu’à sa mort survenue le 17 avril 1789. Son pouvoir est caractérisé par des guerres menées contre des régions voisinesou plus lointaines, des activités économiques largement dominées par la production agricole et une tolérance religieuse avec la présence du christianisme et de l’islam à Agbomè (Abomey).
